Seven Steps Around the Fire is one of Mahesh Dattani’s radio plays that first commissioned by the BBC. The plot revolves around the investigation of the mysterious murder of Kamla, a beautiful eunuch. Uma Rao, daughter of a Vice-Chancellor and wife of the Superintendent of Police, Suresh Rao, is a student of sociology researching the life of a eunuch. She goes to the police station to question Anarkali, another eunuch, who is imprisoned for the murder of Kamla.

Through her questioning, Uma develops an understanding of the plight of the transgendered or ‘hijras’ as they are called in India. Her investigations to find Kamla’s real murderer take her on an unexpected journey
